“Blessed to Be an American”

I know America is not a perfect place. No place is. But it so irks me to see the hate toward this awesome country emanating from people right here, and from all over the world, people who blame us for everything bad under the sun since the dawning of civilization.

Yet, millions continue to flock to the shores of this beautiful land seeking a better life. They come from countries far and wide with varying forms of government – communist, socialist, secular, theocratic, monarchial, royal; countries that are poor, rich, not so rich

Sure America does not have an unblemished history, Sure, it’s taken generations for it to live up to the promises in its glorious Constitution. Sure, we’ve made blunders around the world. But we’ve also sacrificed the lives of Americans in uniform answering the calls of the distressed and oppressed in country after country. The sad reality, though, is that, sometimes the same ones who cry out for our help, often eventually assail us for being there.

We are often accused of seeking oil where there is none, seeking profits where all that exists are barren lands, grieving mothers and children, oppressed peoples, and belligerents hiding in mountains seeking to take us out for anything generous we do – from humanitarian aid to military assistance offered in response to the cries for help.

Let the record be clear. This is one immigrant writer who thanks God every day for bringing him to the shores of the blessed USA.

Even though I am cognizant of the inequities that still exist, of the mistakes that will always be made, America is like a lover. You take her as she is with all her faults because you love her immensely. You recognize your own imperfections and thus do not expect her to be perfect. You’ve tried other experiences and have found out that in life there is no perfection, for we are still all human. But you also know that the one you hold close to your bosom is the one who drives you wild with passion, the one who takes you to the peaks of mountaintops that no one else can, even if they might have a few characteristics that you wish your lover had.

Then again, you reflect, that there is no other who completes you like the one you have fallen for. The one you hold dear in your heart is the one that you will stand up for – come hell or high water. I’ll stand up for America while accepting its imperfections. And I won’t reciprocate animosity to those around the globe who have a love/hate perspective on America.

I’m just thankful that I’m here, that my love is here, and I’ll use my pen to continue to fervently express my admiration for the love of my life.

“The Fictional Politician”

Politicians running for office never tell you only the truth. See, they feel that if they do, no one would vote for them.

I’m not a politician, just a social commentator and writer, so I’ll tell you what they should really say, but are afraid to…the following is from my fictional politician…one I dreamed up….

“Vote for me and I will try to see how much of my plans I can accomplish. I probably won’t be able to even do half of what I want.

“See, in politics, as in everything else in life, there will be compromises, give and take. Sometimes , I’ll have to concede; at other times, those with whom I must work in governing will concede.”

“By the way, I am not God. Please don’t base your entire lives on my winning office because no elected official can correct everything that’s wrong with your life. And even if I do get some things on my agenda through Congress/Parliament, etc., these things can take years to have an effect on anybody’s life..

“Please vote for me. I can’t guarantee you anything…but I’ll try my best to make life a little easier for most, not all of you, in the long run…and remember when policies take effect, some smile and some cry.

“Okay folks, please vote for me.”

“Thanks.

” Sincerely,

“The Fictional Political Candidate.”

“The Role Of A Lifetime”

So many of us want to be a star, a celebrity, or to be someone in the limelight. The best show to star in, though, is your own personal life story.

That is a story that will still be alive as long as you are; and that will not lose its luster even when the paparazzi are gone, when the media loses interests, and when the autograph seekers have moved on to another guy basking in his fifteen minutes of fame.

Give this part your best, for you’ll never be a has-been or an extra. You’ll always hold the starring role, and nothing will ever compare to this, for it’s the most important plot you’ll ever write – a plot that lasts a lifetime.

“The Value Of Character”

The thing about having excellent character is that it is valuable only to you, your loved ones, and those with whom you come into contact. It will not necessarily make you a star or put wealth, fame, and celebrity status on your side; but those things have been known to fizzle and often last only fifteen minutes – then the supporters and fans disappear “like snow upon the desert’s dusty face, which lighting a little hour or two, is gone.” (paraphrased from the “Rubaiyat” by Omar Khayyam).

We all would love wealth and the security that comes with it, but if it means sacrificing character in order to get there, it may not be worthwhile. Character will always keep those who value you as a human being around you – and you’ll sleep better at night knowing that you did not trade your self-worth for valuables that can disappear in an hour like the snow upon a desert that the famed Persian philosopher Omar Khayyam mentions, even though he was referring to worldly hopes, not characrer, in those specific verses.

Indeed, good character is worth more than money in the bank…and you are the only one in control of how long it lasts.

“Novelty in Life, Love, and Friendship”

So often, seeking excitement and change, many succumb to the glitz and glamour of the new. Then they realize that novelty does not necessarily mean better.

We live in a world of choreographed settings, of actors and actresses strutting their wares on TV, on the runway, or on stage…each appearing for a transitory period, only to be soon replaced by another cast – and so it goes on from one episode to the next.

Friendships based purely on flashing neon lights, sex appeal, and popularity, often parallel the great theater all around us – they last a while, then are cast aside when the glow is no more.

Better to stay the course with those who’ve proven to be true and trusted, who, whether they have star appeal, bombshell looks, a ritzy aura, or not, will be with you all the way, as you will be with them – even when the tent has folded and the show has moved on.

“Faking It All The Way”

We live in a world of fakes. Everywhere we turn, we knock into something or someone lacking bona fide characteristics.

There are fake politicians, fake boobs, fake asses, fake smiles, fake friends, and fake athletes.

People fake it in bed, fake it out of bed, at the office, on the street, on TV, and in person. You go online and encounter another minefield of sham sound bites, overtures, relationships, friendships, and even profiles

Now everyone is calling each other a fraud. It’s like we’re all wandering around not knowing who is who, what is what, who is male, who is female, which purchase is as the ad says, which is not, whose credentials are genuine, whose were purchased in Times Square.

Yet we set aside another day in October each year to pretend to be somebody else!

Alas! That we could set aside one to be who we really are…”Reflections Along The Way”

“Human Government”

Wherever you find human beings associating with each other, you will find good as well as evil. It’s just part of the dynamic of existence that appears to have existed from the inception or almost-inception of humanity.

No matter the form of government or lack thereof, we seem collectively incapable of not being evil. Thank God that there are always among us, though, people who see evil and are stunned, alarmed, sickened…and who oppose it.

Every form of so-called civilization and government tried has produced both evil and good in varying degrees, and for some at the expense of others. This includes capitalism, communism, socialism, fascism, monarchies, colonial domination, secular and theocratic systems, democracy and totalitarianism…and the list goes on.

To be sure, it is my belief that the American form of political and economic system is the best of the lot – but by no mean do I believe that it is perfection. There is no perfection under human forms of governments.

Corruption, graft, duplicity, bribery, police brutality, inequities in legal and judicial proceedings, planted evidence, discrimination, harassment, coercion, false evidence, unemployment, homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, poverty, people falling by the wayside and between the cracks – these all exist around the world. It’s just that I believe we stand a better chance in America to seek redress, to pursue justice, and to come as near as possible to the ideal.

Perhaps, the only way to ever attain that utopia, that truly fully just and perfect world is when the kingdom of God is established. Maybe there’s something really awesome, after all, in the Lord’s Prayer….”Our Father in heaven…your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven…..”

“A Conspiracy Behind Every Thing Or Every Person?”

Be mindful of falling victim to so much skepticism and paranoia that you always see a dark and sinister side to everything that occurs. Sure, not everything can be taken at face value, but also not every person, event, or place is dubious and part of a scheme.

Critical thinking is important. Following a bunch of people around looking for conspiracies and hidden agendas behind every occurrence can rob you of proper mental equilibrium.

Never hate so much – whether for political, personal, professional or other reason – that you put on blinders from reality in a deceptive pursuit to flush out falsehood everywhere, every time, in every place.

“You Can’t Go Home Again”

A famous author once wrote that you can never go back home again. This is so true for most who emigrate to new lands.

Many yearn for the beautiful things they left behind, often momentarily forgetting the reasons that made them leave in the first place. The strategies they employ to deal with that vary from one individual to another. Some find it best to so totally immerse themselves in their adopted homelands that there’s no room for yesterday. Others live a surreal life of one foot here, one foot there – not physically, but via cultural and other associations, and access to foods, entertainment, shopping, and events that are overseas versions of what they left behind.

Yet others, torn between two loyalties and emotional attachments, and often despondent of what they must deal with in the new, physically return home. If stats are any indicator, though, most return to their new home after a short sojourn in the old country. They soon realize that the past cannot ever be fully duplicated. Yes, the geography is the same, but the memories involving family,, friends, and childhood can only be recaptured partially, if at all.

I guess Thomas Wolfe was so right in his book, “You Can’t Go Home Again.” But that applies not just to places of geography, as Wolfe himself surmised. In the human life cycle, we go through so many changes and events. Marriages dissolve, relationships go awry, classes graduate, careers change, jobs turn over, neighbors depart, and neighborhoods change.

It’s all part of life, I guess. But so is romanticizing about yesterday and emoting for the good of the past, present, and hopefully also the future. Both nostalgia and forging ahead are integral parts of the human psyche and life cycle. We all reminisce….but sadly, ever so often, we can never really go back home again.

“Why We Need The U.N.”

People often criticize the U.N. as being a meaningless body because conflicts within and among nations still continue. Some even call for its dismemberment.

Only Amighty God can stop all hostilities…until that day, we need the U.N., just like we need the police and other law enforcement.

Sure, crime continues…but think of how many incidents also have been prevented because of the police. Likewise, we must acknowledge that the U.N. cannot stop all wars… but its validity rests in those it has prevented.
